When someone brings up ceramic coatings, it is often assumed that they will be done indoors. Being indoors provides almost perfect conditions that allow a detailer to feel comfortable during the install. For the most part when it comes to being a mobile detailer, "comfort" is out of the picture. I am writing this post to steer some of you out of the elitist mindset and start doing some outdoor ceramic coatings.
If you guys want to get to the point, here is a video that will address some of your questions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cs60LWqXNmc
Climate Conditions:
- Not rainy (obviously).
- Use a canopy if its really hot (although I've heard some detailers brag about doing it out in the sun).
- Minimal wind.
- Most IMPORTANT: Make sure the car ends up indoors to prevent condensation on the paint over night.
- If the last condition is not possible I might have a solution later in this blog.
- Anything out of the ordinary that is not listed here should be common sense.
Work Area:
- Apply the ceramic in no more than 2x2 ft areas. I usually do 1x1 ft.
- Use compressed air to blow dust from an area where you plan to apply the coating.
- Ceramic coatings aren't thick enough to trap dust most of the time, but still be mindful.
- If the coating flashes almost right away when applied, let it sit for 10-20 more seconds before leveling it.
How to Address Mistakes:
- Some coatings are prone to high spots more than others and this is sometimes due to the amount of SiO2 in them.
- If you get a high spot that you can't level, try spraying an SiO2 based sealant over the spot and level it with a microfiber.
- If that does not work, do the same process but with the ceramic coating you used.
-Worst case scenario, machine polish and re-apply.
-To make sure you get the advertised durability, do two coats.
- If the car cannot be left indoors over night, check back in the following morning to see if there was any condensation left on the paint. This shouldn't affect the durability as much as the look so you can just re- seal the paint on the affected areas.
Happy Detailing! remember that these methods have worked for ME and every job is situational. Share your thoughts and methods below.
